Cataract & Lens Implant Surgery
The human lens, situated behind the cornea and the iris of the eye, is clear and allows light to flow through the lens unobstructed.
A cataract is a gradual clouding or discoloring of the lens of the eye, blocking the passage of light through the eye, which results in blurred vision.
Usually the process of forming cataracts continues slowly over a period of years, with vision gradually deteriorating.
Most older people will eventually develop cataracts as a normal part of aging.
Other possible causes of cataracts are exposure to the sun's ultraviolet rays, diabetes, eye injuries, malnutrition, or exposure to toxins and drugs.
The pharmoemulsification technique-which ultrasonically breaks up the clouded lens-allows the surgeon to easily remove the emulsified lens through a small incision, usually requiring no stitches.
The intraocular lens is usually implanted at the same time as the cataract is removed.
During modern implant surgery, a posterior membrane is left in place for protection and health of the eye. After time, if this membrane becomes cloudy, it can be eliminated in a five-minute, painless procedure using the YAG laser.
Symptoms
Symptoms of cataracts may include blurred, fuzzy, or hazy vision, a glare or halo surrounding bright lights, dulled colors, double vision and the need for frequent prescription changes.
The day following the cataract removal and implant surgery, the patient returns to the office for a post-operative visit.
