Corneal Transplant

A Deeper Glance

Corneal transplantation (keratoplasty) is the most successful of all tissue transplants. In about 90% of the cases, the new cornea will remain clear and healthy, allowing the patient to once again enjoy the benefits of good vision

In the healthy eye, the cornea is a clear, dime-sized piece of tissue that fits like a watch crystal on the front, outermost layer of the eye. It transmits light to the interior of the eye, enabling clear vision.

A damaged cornea, like a frosted or warped windowpane, distorts light as it enters the eye. If the cornea becomes cloudy or scarred in the visual axis through injury, disease, infection, or previous eye surgery, a corneal transplant may restore useful vision to the eye.

In addition to evaluating the condition of the cornea, visual acuity and overall health of the eye must be assessed to determine that other parts of the eye are working normally. A corneal transplant is a sophisticated operation that requires skill and training.

The corneal transplant procedure is usually performed at a hospital or outpatient surgery center. Delicate instruments and an operating microscope are used to remove a round portion of the damaged cornea, replacing it with a new, clear cornea from a donor.

Because the cornea heals slowly, full healing and vision improvement may take a year or more.

New anti-rejection medications are now available for some patients who have had corneal transplants in the past which have not been successful. The use of a cyclosporine, a medication commonly used for other types of transplants, is available for the eye.

Advanced techniques for refractive surgery are also available for patients who may have had transplants in the past.
